LEARN PRUNING WITH A PRO
There are many different types of pruning! A quality assessment of overall tree health is critical before any cut is made! The wide variety of cuts and placement of the cuts are not only for tree health but overall appearance after the job is done! Tree characteristics and basic shapes are always taken into consideration as we care about your trees looking natural and healthy!
THE REASON
Removal of dead, dying or diseased branches helps promote tree health! Almost ALL trees benefit from this type of care.
Improved safety is provided when weak branches are removed. Limbs that overhang buildings, parking areas or walkways should be given particular attention. Winter pruning can address these tasks, making trees healthier and safer.
Pruning during winter can also play a role in managing insects and disease!! Pruning when these diseases are not active inhibits their spread.
THE SEASON
Pruning during the winter (dormancy) is most common because it results in a vigorous burst of spring growth! Fresh pruning wounds are only exposed for a short period of time and since there are no leaves to manufacture sugar in the winter, there are no interruption to the tree’s growth cycle! It is less stressful for the tree and as the seasons change, all growth efforts are re-directed to buds on the remaining branches!
Timing is VERY important for species that produce fruit or flowers!
To enhance flowering for trees that bloom in mid to late summer, winter or early spring are the best times!! For plants that bloom earlier in the growing season, it’s best to prune after they finish blooming!
