5 STEPS TO TREE FELLING
  • Identify height and hazards – Determine the height of the tree and overhead hazards.
  • Assess the side lean – Finding the ‘tree lean’ is essential for determining notch placement. You may find that you need mechanical advantage during this step.
  • Plan your escape route – This is the most overlooked portion of tree felling! Your escape route should be cleared of debris, 45° off the back of the tree and never crossing behind the tree!
  • Notch (step 1 of creating the hinge) – Place the notch in the direction that you want the tree to fall. The ideal notch is: Open face 70° or greater. 25-30% of overall tree diameter. Clean apex with 0 bypass.
  • Back cut (step 2 for completing the hinge) – This is an even cut made horizontal toward the apex. Should be 10% of overall tree diameter.
